Dear Friends,

We had a great celebration this past Sunday. So many of you have commented on how great our Centennial worship service and reception was. We had a crowd of friends old and new offer thanksgiving for 100 years of ministry and to move forward into the future. Thank you to everyone who made Sunday so special.

There is no reason to contain our energy! We remain open to the Spirit leading us as we make use of our space. I hope that you are signing up for Neighbor Day. The online auction starts soon and you don't want to miss the festivities during the first week of October. You will also be hearing about guest speakers and other activities in the weeks to come. I highly recommend the pancake breakfast on alternating Saturdays. Those are just a few things.

As we celebrate the years we also dedicate ourselves to continuing our ministry. We need nominees to serve on the vestry. This is our governing board. Vestry members must be confirmed Episcopalians and contribute financially to the parish. Beyond those minimum requirements, they should be folks who are engaged and committed. Send your nominations to me.

We also show our commitment to ministry as we support the work with our money. Thank you for giving generously to the capital campaign and to our budget. It is time to consider what you can give for 2024. You will be receiving pledge cards soon. Prayerfully consider what you can give to support the work we do.

Thanks again for all the energy and excitement around the Centennial. I am also grateful for all the concern expressed for me as we have been dealing with several serious pastoral concerns in our community. Your prayers and concern mean a great deal. I give thanks for the support that so many of you have shown to those in need.

Keep the energy going as we share God's love.

Peace,
Fr. John Mark
FORWARD DAY BY DAY - Matthew 9:10. And as [Jesus] sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with Jesus and his disciples.

Jesus did not seek students who would simply soak up all his wisdom. Jesus did not rally cheerleaders or call people to follow him in order to amass power for himself. Jesus invited people to go and be with him on a mission to go and be with others. Plenty of people have written about Jesus sharing meals with his disciples as well as with people who were socially ostracized, like "tax collectors and sinners." What strikes me about this scene in Matthew, though, is how it speaks to the kind of relationships Jesus was interested in having with people. Jesus invites a tax collector to be part of his mission, and the next thing Jesus does is to eat with him and other people employed as tax collectors. In this, I see a Jesus who is interested not in seeing how many supporters he can acquire for himself or in ordering people to do his bidding but in sharing life with his disciples and with people he meets. Discipleship with Jesus is "sitting with." It is being with. It is solidarity. Source:

DEDICATION CELEBRATION LAST SUNDAY - As the renovations commemorating the centennial anniversary of St. James Episcopal Church are now complete, (except for the highly anticipated arrival of our our cathedral chairs), our Centennial Dedication Ceremony & Celebration was held last Sunday, September 17, 2023. Witnessed by nearly 300 neighbors in-person and online, he ceremony began during the 10:30 am morning worship service in the Nave with The Rt. Rev Bishop Brian Cole presiding. It continued immediately afterwards with a reception in the Parish Hall featuring celebratory cakes baked by our members (their favorites), finger food savories, soft beverages and champagne. ALTAR FLOWERS - It is a St. James tradition to place flowers or greenery on the altar in honor of, or in thanksgiving for loved ones. Altar Flowers/Greenery are needed for Oct 22 & 29Nov. 5, 19, & 26; and Dec 3 & 17. Please contact Linda Goins for information  lgoins@stjamesknox.org or 865-523-5687.

FEED MY SHEEP - Growth, continuity, and tradition have been the hallmarks of St. James during the last 100 years. We pray for God's blessing and the opportunity to share God's love with each other and all who need it during the next 100 years! This delicious PASTA MEDLEY recipe, named for Mark Medley because he thought it was so good, is shared by Sharon Teets.

Salad Ingredients
  • 1-lb. box of pasta (spirals or shells seem to be appealing)
  • 1 can of artichokes (quarter them if not already quartered)
  • 1 can of water chestnuts
  • 2/3 to 3/4 of #2 can of pitted black olives, sliced
  • About ½ package of frozen peas, rinsed with cold water
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of grated onion
  • 2 small packages of blanched, slivered almonds
  • About 1 ½ cups of real or imitation crab meat
  • 1 ½ lb. shrimp, cooked and peeled, cut into bite-sized pieces
I sometimes have added other things -- chopped celery, broccoli, green pepper, red pepper, cheese cubes, or anything else that sounds good. Another variation of this salad is to make it with chicken, and add curry powder (approximately 1 1/2 teaspoons or to taste) to the salad dressing.

Dressing for Pasta Salad
Mix together well:
  • 3/4 cup each of regular mayonnaise and fat-free mayonnaise
  • ½ cup each of light sour cream and plain, non-fat yogurt
  • 2-3 teaspoons dill weed
  • A couple of drops of Tabasco sauce
  • Black pepper to taste
Mix with salad ingredients and taste -- adjust as necessary. Serves approximately 12 for very large main dish servings.

COMMUNITY IMPACT LUNCHEON - The Compassion Coalition held the organization’s sole fundraiser with its annual Community Impact Luncheon this past Tuesday at Cokesbury’s Epworth Hall. Compassion Coalition has 53 church and organization members, (including St. James Episcopal Church), from 20 different denominations. The Compassion Coalition Connection Point Call Center, staffed by a team of caring volunteers, takes calls from families in need. In addition to providing direct assistance and referrals, Compassion Coalition offers 6 different trainings to help churches better serve those in need. This year, nearly 600 people attended 21 trainings facilitated by the staff. Find out more about Compassion Coalition by visiting their website at compassioncoalition.org

LOCAL NEEDS - Compassion Coalition, of which St. James is an active member, is transforming our city. It represents the body of Christ working together in unity to serve the greatest needs. These local needs have been identified by Compassion Coalition . . .
A single mom of twin preschoolers in the 37921 area needs a sturdy, wooden dresser for the twins' bedroom, a chest of drawers or dresser is fine. If you can help contact lila.powers@knoxvilleheadstart.org

A family that is in need of a mattress for their child. If you can help contact amber.cruze@knoxschools.org.

HELPING HANDS PRAYER - Please pray for the Helping Hands ministry group on Saturday, September 23 as they move their food/fellowship time, check-in, and prayer requests back into the Parish Hall. We always appreciate your support and feel secure in your prayers for this ministry to our neighbors. Prayer - Thank you, Father, for giving us the opportunity to tend and feed your sheep in our neighborhood.  Guide us in seeking and serving Christ in each person we meet, respecting the dignity of every human being.  Help us to remember that we are your voice and heart as well as your hands and feet, and that smiles hugs and kind words feed the soul as surely as bread nourishes the body.  Grant us patience with ourselves,  each other and those we serve. Please forgive us when we fall short of the goal.  Bless those who receive and those who give with your heavenly grace and the peace that passes understanding.  Amen

THE SACRAMENTS IN A DISENCHANTED WORLD - Come join a conversation on the enduring and evolving meaning of the Sacraments in Christian worship.  Bring your thoughts and questions about what the Sacraments mean today.  Science changed the world about 400 years ago, allegedly explaining everything with atoms and molecules.  Water, bread, and wine are made of atoms and molecules, aren't they.  So what happens when we name them "these holy mysteries" in which we encounter and embody the Body of Christ?  What does "real presence" mean?  No one has a final answer to these questions, but we can share our stories, and look back at others' stories, about what these Sacraments mean, and grow together as we share.  We will be enlisting the help of brilliant philosopher/theologian/Anglican Priest John MacQuarrie as we explore. So come join us on Oct. 1, 8, 15, and 22, at 9:15 on Sunday mornings, to consider the meaning of Sacraments in today's world. Conversation facilitated by Brian Austin.

THE SUNDAY PAPER (FOR KIDS) - In this “new normal” world of uncertainty, with multiple options of in-person church, livestreamed church, at-home church, and other non-traditional ways of doing church, there is a new urgency for materials that children can read and ponder for themselves, at home, with their parents or even alone. The Sunday Paper Junior is ideal for this purpose. It works well in church, as a children’s bulletin—particularly in parishes where children are present for the readings and sermon, and need a quiet activity to help fend off the fidgets. Current editions of The Sunday Paper Junior, to which St. James has a paid subscription, are posted here, ( Sep 24, Oct 01, Oct 08, Oct 15 ), with permission of the author/illustrator, Gretchen Wolff Pritchard. BLUE BOX TIME - It's Blue Box time again at St. James.  The United Thank Offering boxes will be available this Sunday.  Whenever you recognize and name a daily blessing offer a short prayer of thanksgiving and drop some money in the box.

Collected funds go to the national UTO office to fund grants for significant projects such as kitchen equipment for a homeless shelter, a school in the Dominican Republic, afterschool programs and much more.  The next ingathering will be Sunday, Nov. 12.

OUR CENTENNIAL PRAYER - Lord Christ, the shepherd of the sheep, we give thanks for those  who have built up the work of St. James over the past 100 years. Give us grace to continue in their faithfulness by doing justice and mercy in this community. Grant us generous hearts to support and build the resources that will strengthen and continue our work of feeding and tending your sheep. May we do all these things to your glory, you who reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
