Come and celebrate our centennial this Sunday! We will offer thanksgiving for a century of ministry, our recent renovations, and for a hopeful vision of the future. Bishop Cole will be with us as we gather for one service only at 10:30 AM. Stay for some birthday cake and to connect with friends old and new.
It would be difficult to list everyone who has helped bring us to this celebration. I will start with a big thank you to all of you who have contributed to our capital campaign. By investing in this work we tangibly express our faith that we are called to share God's love from this place. The improvements to our buildings help us continue to feed and tend God's sheep.
There are a few things that we continue to work on. The chairs for the nave have been delayed. Please know that the chairs we are currently using are not the chairs we will continue using. We continue to work on adjusting the climate control, tweaking acoustics, restoring our livestream feed, and finding a place for everything. We are also on a journey of discovering new ways to use and share our space. Thank you for your flexibility in all the changes and adjustments.
As we celebrate 100 years, we give thanks for those who established and supported this parish over the years. We are grateful for the vision of leaders that guided us to hold to the treasures of our faith while responding in creative ways to the needs or our community. We give thanks that Christ, the Good Shepherd, strengthens us to feed and tend God's sheep.
Peace,
Fr. John Mark
FORWARD DAY BY DAY -Galatians 6:14. May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. I have longed for meaning in inscrutable and senseless events. I have tried to build coherent explanations for the unexplainable because I don't want heartache, suffering, or loss to be an abrupt ending to a story that can't be finished. But Paul's words express more than a desire to make meaning of an inexlicable situation. Paul proclaims Jesus's cross as a site where both the imperial world's constructions of meaning and his own have been put to death. He refuses to accept that "Christ died for nothing:• as he says in Galatians 2:21, because Jesus's death transformed meaning and instigated "a new creation" for everyone-including Paul. Jesus changed Paul forever. Jesus enables Jews and Gentiles to become "one" (Galatians 3:28). His cross is more than any empire, more than the world, can handle. Source Forward Day by Day

TOILET PAPER SUNDAY - SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is a government program spearheaded by the Food and Nutrition Services branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The program provides benefits, in the form of reloadable debit cards, to families who need financial assistance. The money can be used to purchase foods such as bread, cereal, meat, fish and poultry, dairy products, snack foods and even seeds that can be used to grow foods. However, toilet tissue is one of several necessary items that cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits, so we try to address those issues through our Helping Hands Bring-An-Item Sundays program. Please donate a roll or package of toilet tissue to our Helping Hands Ministry THIS Sunday, or anytime. As always, we sincerely appreciate your support and generosity.
IN-PERSON BIBLE STUDY -Contemporary Bible study is a practice that seeks to explore and understand the teachings of the Bible in the context of modern times. It involves the examination of biblical texts, their historical and cultural backgrounds, as well as the application of those teachings to contemporary issues and challenges faced by individuals and society. Beginning Wednesday, Sep 20, we will meet in-person to explore two short stories, a melodrama, a play, a fractured fairy tale and more -- all found in the books of Jonah, Ruth, Job, Ester, and others. Led by Marie Cantrell, our in-person Bible study class will take place Wednesday mornings from 10 am - 11:15 am, September 20 - October 25. The first meeting will take place in the Choir Room on the second floor of the Parish House, accessible using our new elevator! If interested, contact Marie Cantrell, mariewcantrell@gmail.com.
THE SACRAMENTS IN A DISENCHANTED WORLD - Come join a conversation on the enduring and evolving meaning of the Sacraments in Christian worship. Bring your thoughts and questions about what the Sacraments mean today. Science changed the world about 400 years ago, allegedly explaining everything with atoms and molecules. Water, bread, and wine are made of atoms and molecules, aren't they. So what happens when we name them "these holy mysteries" in which we encounter and embody the Body of Christ? What does "real presence" mean? No one has a final answer to these questions, but we can share our stories, and look back at others' stories, about what these Sacraments mean, and grow together as we share. We will be enlisting the help of brilliant philosopher/theologian/Anglican Priest John MacQuarrie as we explore. So come join us on Oct. 1, 8, 15, and 22, at 9:15 on Sunday mornings, to consider the meaning of Sacraments in today's world. Conversation facilitated by Brian Austin.

THE SUNDAY PAPER (FOR KIDS) - In this “new normal” world of uncertainty, with multiple options of in-person church, livestreamed church, at-home church, and other non-traditional ways of doing church, there is a new urgency for materials that children can read and ponder for themselves, at home, with their parents or even alone. The Sunday Paper Junior is ideal for this purpose. It works well in church, as a children’s bulletin—particularly in parishes where children are present for the readings and sermon, and need a quiet activity to help fend off the fidgets. Current editions of The Sunday Paper Junior, to which St. James has a paid subscription, are posted here, ( Sep 17 A, Sep 17 B, Sep 24, Oct 01, Oct 08, Oct 15 ), with permission of the author/illustrator, Gretchen Wolff Pritchard.
