Dear Friends,

A new season approaches and I know many of us are looking forward to cooler weather and football on the weekends. We are also fast approaching our 100-year celebration of ministry on September 17. Bishop Cole will be with us and of course, we will pray, sing, and eat some cake. The celebration will continue throughout the year as we tell stories of our past and live into the present.

These new seasons are somewhat familiar and also different. Many of you have commented on how much you have enjoyed the intimacy of worshiping in the parish hall. It has been lovely. Moving back into the nave will have a different nuance even though we will be using the same liturgy. We can learn and grow as we experience those differences. I look forward to where the Spirit will take us.

I am sad to report that the chairs for the nave have been delayed. All reports were that everything was on schedule for delivery this week. Then we got word that there was a delay. Even so, we will be back in the nave for worship on September 10, and our celebration will carry on. Please note that this means that the seating we will use is not a permanent solution. The chairs are on order and should be here in October. That will be another occasion to celebrate.

We have had reason to celebrate the lives of dear friends lately. Our parish has experienced the unexpected deaths of a few friends. I am grateful for the support of so many of you who come together to care for each other in grief. That care is a powerful ministry. Thank you.

Celebrate the season! Celebrate the ministry of St. James! Give thanks for all the ways God is revealed to us.

Peace,
Fr. John Mark
FORWARD DAY BY DAY - Psalm 37:10. For evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait upon the LORD shall possess the land. For most of my life, I've viewed the message of Psalm 37 as a mash-up of the tortoise and the hare fable and David versus Goliath: the underdog's faithfulness and righteousness will eventually triumph over mighty wickedness. As we face a global climate crisis, however, this psalm strikes a different chord for me. Five times the psalmist predicts that certain people "shall possess the land." But what does possessing the land mean when human beings have devastated so much on this .planet? What do we do with a psalm that celebrates land as a hopeful gift in an ecological emergency? In her book Biblical Prophecy, Ellen Davis argues that God's relationship with the Israelites also involves the land as a third participant. If loving God and ·neighbor also requires loving the land, as Davis suggests, then this psalm's advocacy of justice and generosity among people lights a path for practicing the same with the earth.  Source Forward Day by Day

IN-PERSON BIBLE STUDY - Contemporary Bible study is a practice that seeks to explore and understand the teachings of the Bible in the context of modern times. Led by Marie Cantrell, our in-person Bible study class will take place Wednesday mornings from 10 am - 11:15 am, September 20 - October 25 in Conference Room A. THE SUNDAY PAPER (FOR KIDS) - In this “new normal” world of uncertainty, with multiple options of in-person church, livestreamed church, at-home church, and other non-traditional ways of doing church, there is a new urgency for materials that children can read and ponder for themselves, at home, with their parents or even alone. The Sunday Paper Junior is ideal for this purpose. It works well in church, as a children’s bulletin—particularly in parishes where children are present for the readings and sermon, and need a quiet activity to help fend off the fidgets. Current editions of The Sunday Paper Junior, to which St. James has a paid subscription, are posted here, ( Sep 10, Sep 17 A, Sep 17 B, Sep 24, Oct 01, Oct 08, Oct 15 ), with permission of the author/illustrator, Gretchen Wolff Pritchard. CATHEDRAL CHAIR DEDICATIONS - More than 60 of our new cathedral chairs have been sponsored in thanksgiving or in memory of loved ones by family, friends, and St. James ministry groups. Our solid red oak chairs will have the look and feel of pew seating but they will be much more comfortable and allow for greater seating flexibility. You are invited to "sponsor" an individual cathedral chair(s) by making a $500 cash contribution to St. James Episcopal Church. In exchange for your cash contribution, the backside of each chair you sponsor will be fitted with an engraved brass plate commemorating your gift. Access a Cathedral Chair Sponsorship Form at THIS LINK. If you have additional questions about sponsoring one or more cathedral chairs, please contact kevin@stjamesknox.org or jwiggers@stjamesknox.org. Below are examples of the dedications that have already been secured. Three more examples will be displayed next week!

OUR CENTENNIAL PRAYER - Lord Christ, the shepherd of the sheep, we give thanks for those  who have built up the work of St. James over the past 100 years. Give us grace to continue in their faithfulness by doing justice and mercy in this community. Grant us generous hearts to support and build the resources that will strengthen and continue our work of feeding and tending your sheep. May we do all these things to your glory, you who reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
