AUGUST BIRTHDAYS

ALTAR FLOWERS - It is a St. James tradition to place flowers or greenery on the altar in honor of, or in thanksgiving for loved ones. Altar Flowers/Greenery are needed for Aug 20; Sep 24; Oct 1, 8, 15, & 29; Nov. 5, 19, & 26; and Dec 3 & 17. Please contact Linda Goins for information lgoins@stjamesknox.org or 865-523-5687.
Dear Friends,
"Every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.” Matthew 13:52
As we move toward the completion of our renovations, I think about the place of St. James in this community over the past 100 years. We continue to hold our Episcopal identity rooted in ancient traditions while engaging what is new. I believe that being good stewards of our property can (at our best) only strengthen our ministry. We are not preserving a museum of faith. We bring out the treasures of the faith and embrace what is new and emerging.
Some of the "new" for us will be found in the subtle ways that changing our space influences how we worship and do ministry. The flexibility of our space calls us to use it faithfully to share what is old and what is new for the kingdom. I encourage us all to dream of ways to share God's love in a world that is anxious, afraid, and hopeless. Let us dream together.
While we dream we also gather in many ways. Remember that our 100-year anniversary celebration is on September 17. Bishop Cole will join us to bless and dedicate our renovations. Before then, we continue to feed and tend God's sheep. You will find opportunities to pray, study, and serve in this newsletter.
Thank you for all the ways that you bring out what is old and what is new in order to share God's love with others. May we dream with God a vision of hope, healing, and love.
Peace,
Fr. John Mark

The cost of the new Parish Hall Seating was approximately $19,800. The new chairs are are larger, lighter in weight, and more easily stackable. They will contribute to the expanded use of our gathering space and provide enhanced comfort during meetings and social events. Your financial gift to assist in covering the cost of these improvements will help to ensure the continued success of our ministry for many years to come.

CENTENNIAL QUILT UPDATE - The St. James Centennial Quilt is steadily moving along as our volunteer quilters are busily stitching the chosen colors. Thanks to all of the approximately 200 friends & neighbors who have already signed. We look forward to showing the finished quilt to you this fall! If you need more information about the quilt or would like to help in any way, please contact Bea Emory beaemory@att.net
CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS - As we continue to hold Sunday morning worship services, weekly discussion groups, community meetings, and social events in the newly renovated Parish Hall, the installation of an elevator to the second floor of the Parish House is nearly finished. Intensive renovations in the nave are also nearing completion, including installation of a safer more gradual ramped incline to the altar rail, the refinished floor, and the installation of a permanent labyrinth. The cracks in both parking lots have been repaired and their entire surface areas have been seal-coated. Work has begun on the gates at the courtyard. We remain on pace to achieve our goal of project completion by September 24, 2023. Click the images below for a closer inspection of some of the renovations currently underway. Please make your donation to the Centennial Capital Campaign to help us keep up with the expenses incurred thus far as we prepare our facilities for the next 100 years!

CATHEDRAL CHAIR DEDICATIONS - Over 55 of our new cathedral chairs have been sponsored in thanksgiving or in memory of loved ones by family, friends, and St. James ministry groups. Our solid red oak chairs will have the look and feel of pew seating but they will be much more comfortable and allow for greater seating flexibility. You are invited to "sponsor" an individual cathedral chair(s) by making a $500 cash contribution to St. James Episcopal Church. In exchange for your cash contribution, the backside of each chair you sponsor will be fitted with an engraved brass plate commemorating your gift. Access a Cathedral Chair Sponsorship Form at THIS LINK. If you have additional questions about sponsoring one or more cathedral chairs, please contact kevin@stjamesknox.org or jwiggers@stjamesknox.org. Below are examples of the dedications that have already been secured. Three more examples will be displayed next week!
INVEST IN ST. JAMES - To date, we have secured $740,488 in gifts to our Centennial Capital Campaign - 37.0% of our $2 million fundraising goal.
- Campaign Donations: $385,113
- Additional Pledged Donations: $321,705
- Cathedral Chair Donations: $27,500
- Pew Purchase Donations: $2,700
- Quilt Signature Donations: $3,470
- TOTAL: $740,488 (37.0% Goal)
That's a great start, but we need to raise much more to do what must be done to upgrade our facilities. Renovations in the kitchen, parish hall, and administrative wing are nearly complete as renovations in the nave are in full swing! So, if you have been prayerfully thinking about making a pledge, now would be a great time to help us keep up with the expenses we are incurring and accelerate the progress toward reaching our goal. Please join the folks who have already pledged and/or made cash contributions to the campaign. Obtain a downloadable Capital Campaign Pledge Form by clicking THIS LINK.

OUR CENTENNIAL PRAYER - Lord Christ, the shepherd of the sheep, we give thanks for those who have built up the work of St. James over the past 100 years. Give us grace to continue in their faithfulness by doing justice and mercy in this community. Grant us generous hearts to support and build the resources that will strengthen and continue our work of feeding and tending your sheep. May we do all these things to your glory, you who reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The cost of the new Nave Seating was approximately $69,000. Our new cathedral chairs will offer the same distinguished look of pews, but will provide increased seating flexibility, improved accessibility, and enhanced comfort during all services & community gatherings. Your financial gift to assist in covering the cost of these improvements will help to ensure the continued success of our ministry for many years to come.

AUDIO/VISUAL TEAM - The Audio/Visual (A/V) Team at St. James has been recording and preserving audio & video files of worship services for nearly 10 years. The team was originally formed to ensure the audio equipment was set up and adjusted properly to provide the best possible sound in the Nave during every 10:30 am morning worship service. In 2014, its role was expanded to include producing and archiving AUDIO recordings of each sermon. Four years later, the team further expanded its role to include producing VIDEO recordings of portions of each service for replay on local community television. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the team responded to the challenge of keeping our church family connected by streaming live Sunday services via Zoom. Following the pandemic, the A/V team has continued to keep homebound, sick, and traveling neighbors engaged in our church by providing live streaming via YouTube. The number of households watching the live stream event on any given Sunday currently averages from 15 - 20 viewers. The average number of views by church members and a wider audience for each archived video recording currently exceeds 100 views. You can find all of our video recordings by clicking this VIDEO FILE LINK. You can find all of our audio recordings by clicking this AUDIO FILE LINK. If you would be interested in supporting the St. James A/V Team in any way, please contact Margaret Bickley mbick7@gmail.com or Kevin Jeske-Polyak kevin@stjamesknox.org.
DOORSTEP MINISTRY GROUP - Since the turn of the century, the St. James Doorstep ministry has been assisting neighbors in need who reach out for help either in person or by telephone. In addition to providing helpful resource referrals, Doorstep volunteers prepare and distribute simple bagged lunches for neighbors who come to our door needing a meal between the hours of 11:30 am - 1 pm, Monday through Thursday. Lunches include a cheese sandwich, fruit cup, snack crackers, pudding, and a bottle of cold water. Occasionally, other items are donated for inclusion in the lunch. During the first 6 months of this year, nearly 1,250 lunches were distributed at our doorstep. If you would be interested in supporting the Doorstep Ministry Group in any way, please contact the church office 865-523-5687 or Kevin Jeske-Polyak kevin@stjamesknox.org.
MEDICAL RESPONSE TEAM - The Medical Response Team at St. James is a group of persons who have first aid and CPR training and who are willing to be assigned to serve on a rotating basis in case of an emergency during a service at the church. Ushers keep watchful eyes on the congregation and can alert a Medical Response Team member if someone is in need of assistance. In case of emergencies, there is an automated external defibrillator (AED) available as well as a first aid kit and blood pressure cuff. The Medical Response Team member may designate someone to get those items or to call 911, if needed. If you are a healthcare worker and are interested in serving with this team, please contact Margaret Bickley mbick7@gmail.com or Kevin Jeske-Polyak kevin@stjamesknox.org.
SUMMER SCHOOL - The summer months are a great time to review your status regarding the Safe Church Training every clergy member, paid staff, youth ministry worker, elected officer, and key holder at St. James is required to maintain. Depending on the role(s) in which you serve, you may be required to maintain certification in several of the courses offered online by the Diocese of East Tennessee listed below:

- Duty to Report: Mandated Reporter
- Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee
If you are unsure about the training you should receive, or whether you need to refresh your certification, please email Kevin Jeske-Polyak kevin@stjamesknox.org. He will guide you through the process.
HELPING HANDS - Recently, Troy, one of our pre-pandemic regular clients, stopped by to share news of his much improved situation - securing an apartment in Love Towers behind the church and sufficient funds to provide for his needs. He went on to say how much the food pantry ministry means to him and how several times that we had "saved" him. We know our Helping Hands ministry provides "end of the money/benefits" before the end of the month, but had not thought of the ministry in such terms of "saving" someone. Troy explained how safe and welcome he feels at St. James, from the smiles of folks on the serving line and having a choice of drink & food to the warm greetings in the Helping Hands room as he picked up his food bag. We listened and heard the picture he was painting - the chatter of friends at the food line, the murmur of conversation at the meal tables, the fun at the monthly birthday parties, and just knowing he had a place to go when he was feeling overwhelmed. Of special importance to him were the annual Holiday Meal and Christmas Pantry. At Christmas when he couldn't afford any gifts for his children, he so appreciated the Toy Store that made it possible for him to provide something special that they weren't expecting. During his recent visit, he refused a food bag and lunch. He said he just wanted to say thank you for all the help when he needed it and how much we had touched his life. With humility and gratitude we can help fulfill our goal to seek and serve Christ in every person we meet and to treat everyone with dignity and respect. Contact Ginny Combs gcombs1947@outlook.com for more information about Helping Hands. The 3rd Sunday of the month is "Bring An Item" Day at St. James to support Helping Hands. This month (Aug 20) everyone is encouraged to bring a bottle of Hand/Body Lotion.
LOCAL NEEDS - Compassion Coalition, of which St. James is an active member, is transforming our city. It represents the body of Christ working together in unity to serve the greatest needs. These local needs have been identified by Compassion Coalition . . .
Two young ladies who just aged out of foster care are moving into separate apartments this week and are in need of kitchen essentials and cleaning supplies. If you can assist these two young ladies, please contact mikayla@compassioncoalition.org or call Mikayla at (865) 321-1304.
A newly housed veteran in the 37917 area needs a TV, a can opener, and pots and pans. If able to assist, please email evan.baker1@va.gov or call 423-767-9609.
A woman on a fixed income needs a replacement blower motor for her 2012 Toyota Camry. She is able to find someone to help with the repair, but can't afford the part itself. The estimated cost for the part is less than $200. If you can help contact anne.singleton@cherokeehealth.com.
A young mom with a 3-year-old needs a queen-size mattress, frame, and box springs. If you can help please contact Susan at martins@unitedwayknox.org.
A young man who works at one of our local factories needs a car desperately. His car, and 3 others, were smashed by trees in the last storm and sadly, neither his insurance nor the landlord's insurance will pay because it was," an act of God." Without a vehicle, he will lose his job and apartment. If you can help contact Gerri at (865) 789-6392.
JUSTICE KNOX NEWS - Our justice ministry is growing! This fall we have four new Team Leaders who will be hosting House Meetings and growing organized people power for justice in our community. Marilyn Canady, Kim Yearman, and Kevin & Drew Jeske-Polyak have agreed to take on the Team Leader role which means they will be hosting House Meetings this fall and shepherding Network Members through their commitments to this work. Please congratulate our newest Team Leaders as they step into their new roles. If you want to learn more about Justice Knox and making Knoxville a more just community, please contact Fr. John Mark Wiggers jwiggers@stjamesknox.org, Carol Yates cyates0222@gmail.com, or Mark Reddaway markreddaway1953@icloud.com.
The cost of the Columbarium Expansion was approximately $11,000. It will help to preserve the enduring legacy of church family members by doubling its capacity from 48 niches to 96 niches. It will also contribute to the overall beauty of our memorial garden. Your financial gift to assist in covering the cost of these improvements will help to ensure the continued success of our ministry for many years to come.

BLESSINGS OF THE BACKPACKS - It is that time of year! Back to school! (School and Backpacks go together!) Young children, teenagers, young adults, and perhaps some mature adults are heading back to school. Buying school supplies in this economy is tough. Prices keep rising, and the purchase of more and more school supplies has become the responsibility of the "student" (and family). For those of us who want to and can, let's bless these students with some school supplies or backpacks. Each student deserves to shine, striving for success in learning. Make the school year brighter (and the load lighter) for them by donating what you can. We will celebrate "Blessings of the Backpacks" on Sunday, August 13th. This is when all donated backpacks and supplies will be blessed. This year, Father John Mark will be handing out crosses to keep with you in your backpack to remind you that God is by your side every step of the way. If you would like any additional information, please contact Theresa Russell at tde444@yahoo.com or 727-858-8444.
THE SUNDAY PAPER JUNIOR is a publication shared with our younger children, (preschool through grade 3 or 4), during Children's Nursery. It features one of our weekly lessons, (usually the Gospel), offering big, bold artwork, a simple story line, and an activity page designed to stir children's imaginations and spirituality. It only requires a pencil or crayons (no glue or scissors). Copies of the remaining summer issues of The Sunday Paper Junior are posted here with permission of the author/illustrator, Gretchen Wolff Pritchard. Jul 30, Aug 06, Aug 13, Aug 20, Aug 27, Sep 03

The cost of the Elevator Installation, (including labor), was approximately $105,500. This will increase space utilization, improve accessibility for mobility challenged neighbors, and prevent slips & falls that might otherwise occur on the stairs. Your financial gift to assist in covering the cost of these improvements will help to ensure the continued success of our ministry for many years to come.
JULY FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE RECAP - Seated around seven large round tables in the Parish Hall, a record number of 42 neighbors shared warm fellowship, delicious food, and thoughtful discussion during our July Friendship Dinner. The pleasant aroma of the food prepared by Tarik's North African filled the Parish House from one end to the other and the flavor was just as delightful. The discussion, moderated by Fr. John Mark and Katharine Pearson Criss, focused on all the benefits of our realized capital improvements and exploration of ways we can think inside the "outer edges" of the box to creatively expand ways we use our renovated spaces. Click the images below to see if you recognize some of your neighbors!

WEDDING PLANNER - Everyone knows the months of September, October, & November are filled with festivities related to VOLS Football. Traffic congestion and conflicting schedules are always a consideration when planning a major event. So, for your convenience, we've posted the full 2023 VOLS Football Schedule, including seven home games that will be played on Sept 9, Sep 23, Sep 30, Oct 14, Nov 4, Nov 18, & Nov 25. WHAT IS A LABYRINTH? A labyrinth is a maze-like structure that consists of intricate pathways leading to a central point. Unlike a traditional maze, a labyrinth has only one path, allowing for a meditative and introspective experience. It is often used as a tool for reflection, contemplation, and spiritual journeys. Walking through a labyrinth symbolically represents the journey of life, with its twists and turns, challenges, and moments of discovery. As one navigates through the winding path, they can find solace, clarity, and a sense of connection with themselves and the world around them. Soon, St. James will be offering our neighbors the opportunity to walk through the newly constructed labyrinth on the floor of our nave. Keep watching for updated information.
The cost of the pressure washing and repairs to the Stucco & Sidewalks was approximately $8,700. In addition to the incredibly improved appearance, it will help to extend the life of these structures and improve pest control. Your financial gift to assist in covering the cost of these improvements will help to ensure the continued success of our ministry for many years to come.

St. James Episcopal Church
FINANCIAL SUMMARY
through June 30, 2023
Operating Revenue To Date: $287,414 (unrestricted)
Operating Expenses: $314,240
Net Operating Revenue: ($26,826)
Just a reminder that there are a couple of ways to give online at St. James.
One way is to click the GIVING tab at our website - stjamesknox.org. This will open a menu of options. After selecting one of the options, you can make your gift by providing a valid email address and payment information. If you already have a Realm account, just log in and go to the Giving menu item on the left hand side of the screen.
Another way to give is by text. Just text the phrase “stjamesbroadway” to the number 73256, you’ll be directed to a giving portal to enter your information and make your gift. If your email address matches what we have on record, the amount will be added to your records on Realm.
About Your Records - You always have access to your own records. In order to retrieve them, you must first create a Realm account. From there, you can view your giving history as well as print them out for your own record keeping or tax purposes.
About Recurring Gifts - Since Realm is now the preferred method for online giving at St. James, previously established Vanco Direct donation accounts must be canceled and reset to create a new GIVING LINK through Realm. While this can be done relatively easily on your own, we would like to work with you to convert your account over to Realm. If you are the least bit unsure how to proceed, please contact Bob, bob@stjamesknox.org, 865-523-5687.
Planned Giving - also referred to as “legacy” giving - enables individuals to make larger gifts to St. James than they could make from ordinary income. A planned gift is a major gift made during a lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial or estate planning. Planned gifts include donations made through a will, gifts of equity from an IRA, life insurance, and/or gift trusts. By contrast, pledged gifts are made from a donor’s discretionary income. Pledges are included in the annual operational budget, but they are not assured. Whether donors provide cash, appreciated securities, stock, life insurance, a retirement plan, or some other valuable asset, the benefits of funding generated through a planned gift can make this type of charitable giving very attractive to both the donor and St. James. For more information, contact your Financial Advisor and let us know of the plan. Or, you can contact the St. James Financial Advisors:
Robert Williams - Registered Representative - Cetera Advisor Networks LLC, member FINRA/SIPC (865) 558-1779
Katharine Pearson Criss - Philanthropic Advisor - Cetera Advisor Networks LLC, member FINRA/SIPC (865) 748-8371
The cost of the new HVAC, Kitchen & Plumbing Upgrades, (including labor), was approximately $830,000. These improvements will improve equipment reliability, increase energy efficiency, reduce electric & gas utilities, improve flow of work & storage capacity, and improve safety, cleanliness & sanitation. Your financial gift to assist in covering the cost of these improvements will help to ensure the continued success of our ministry for many years to come.
