ALTAR FLOWERS - It is a St. James tradition to place flowers or greenery on the altar in honor of, or in thanksgiving for loved ones. Altar Flowers/Greenery are needed for Aug 20; Sep 24; Oct 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29; Nov. 5, 19, & 26; and Dec 3 & 17. Please contact Linda Goins for information  lgoins@stjamesknox.org or 865-523-5687.

Dear Friends,

Last week I joined others at the funeral of The Rev. David Hackett. Many of you knew David from his time as interim rector at St. James. I learned that many years earlier, Fr. Hackett was a member of St. James, discerned a call to ministry, and was eventually ordained right here at 1101 Broadway. Another fun connection was that David led the project to replace the pews with chairs while serving at St. Timothy's, Signal Mountain. I give thanks for the ministry of David Hackett here and in the broader church.

As we celebrate 100 years as a parish, we have many people to celebrate. This community has been built by faithful people offering their gifts. We continue to gather people seeking to love God and their neighbor. I know that I do that so much better when I walk with others. Faith isn't just a personal thing. Do justice, living faithfully, and loving mercy happen in the life of a community.

As we celebrate independence day, I am grateful that we live in a nation where we are allowed to worship freely. I celebrate also the fact that we are a country that allows us to question and critique our past and the present. As followers of Christ, we do so with a belief that there is a way to repent of the failures of the past and to bring something new into being. We are a community that follows Christ into the world.

It is summer and many of us are traveling and enjoying warm weather. I remind you to keep up your pledges to the general budget and to the capital campaign. I also hope that you will be able to join us for a Friendship Circle dinner on Monday, July 24. There will be more changes as the renovation rolls on. (Have you seen the building after it was washed?) We give, we gather, we renovate so that we can continue to do ministry in the community. Thank you for offering yourself in the long line of faithful people who have made St. James a witness to the transforming love of Christ.

Peace,
Fr. John Mark

You may have noticed the "new look" our buildings are sporting as a result of the professional pressure-washing work performed by Top Knox Pressure Washing this month! Trey Gaff and the team at Top Knox demonstrated great care and super efficiency in removing the dark stains that had resulted from years of weathering. The difference in the appearance is truly amazing!

CENTENNIAL QUILT UPDATE - The St. James Centennial Quilt is steadily moving along as our volunteer quilters are busily stitching the chosen colors. If you have not signed yet, please do so by July 15th. Thanks to all of the approximately 200 friends & neighbors who have already signed. We look forward to showing the finished quilt to you this fall! If you need more information about the quilt or would like to help in any way, please contact Bea Emory beaemory@att.net

OUTREACH/IN-REACH - One of the many wonderful things about the ministry at St. James is our history of providing outreach and in-reach to our neighbors through the many different ministry groups that meet and serve from this place. A printed guide describing more than 40 of these groups may be accessed and downloaded by clicking THIS LINK. During the next couple of months, these descriptions are being reviewed and updated. We are also inviting group leaders & volunteers to record video interviews regarding their mission and activities. Edited excerpts from these interviews will be shared in future editions of the St. James Sentinel and at our website. To schedule a 30-minute interview at St. James pertaining to your ministry group, please contact Kevin Jeske-Polyak kevin@stjamesknox.org

SEPTEMBER 17TH CELEBRATION - St. James Episcopal Church is celebrating its 100th year as a part of Knoxville’s religious community. We are truly proud of our heritage and look forward to preserving it for another century. To commemorate this significant milestone, we are reaching out to all whose personal history has been touched by St. James at one time or another in the past whether through baptism, confirmation, marriage, memorial, or general attendance. We hope you will join us in the centennial observance and celebration to be held on Sunday, September 17th. On that date, you will recognize familiar sights on the outside, but many of the views on the inside will be strikingly new. You will see the results of  the recently renovated parish hall originally built in 1996. Less visible, but equally important, you will find a new heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system. In the nave, originally built in 1923, you will notice the traditional pews have been replaced by individual cathedral chairs which will allow more flexibility for worship services, conferences, and other get-togethers. We hope you will join the celebration on September 17th and participate in our centennial capital campaign. There are numerous ways to help with the capital campaign, including: providing a one-time gift or a pledge contributed over time, sponsorship of a cathedral chair honoring loved ones, and/or a planned legacy gift. If you are unable to make a gift, please honor us with your presence on September 17th. Thank you for having made St. James a part of your spiritual journey. May the Lord bless you and guide you in the years ahead.

CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS - Through the summer holding Sunday morning worship services, weekly discussion groups, community meetings, and social events in the newly renovated Parish Hall. Work is well underway to complete the installation of an elevator to the second floor of the Parish House and renovation of Conference Room A. Intensive renovations are well underway in the nave, including installation of a safer more gradual ramped incline to the altar rail and refinishing of the floor with an epoxy resin and permanent labyrinth. Meanwhile, the exterior walls of our buildings and sidewalks have been fabulously pressure washed to reveal their natural beauty. We remain on pace to achieve our goal of project completion by September 24, 2023. Click the images below for a closer inspection of some of the renovations currently underway. Please make your donation to the Centennial Capital Campaign to help us keep up with the expenses incurred thus far as we prepare our facilities for the next 100 years!

CATHEDRAL CHAIR DEDICATIONS - Approximately 45 of our new cathedral chairs have been sponsored in thanksgiving or in memory of loved ones by family, friends, and St. James ministry groups. Our solid red oak chairs will have the look and feel of pew seating but they will be much more comfortable and allow for greater seating flexibility. You are invited to "sponsor" an individual cathedral chair(s) by making a $500 cash contribution to St. James Episcopal Church. In exchange for your cash contribution, the backside of each chair you sponsor will be fitted with an engraved brass plate commemorating your gift. Access a Cathedral Chair Sponsorship Form at THIS LINK. If you have additional questions about sponsoring one or more cathedral chairs, please contact kevin@stjamesknox.org or jwiggers@stjamesknox.org. Below are examples of the dedications that have already been secured. Three more examples will be displayed next week!

INVEST IN ST. JAMES - To date, we have secured $707,304 in gifts to our Centennial Capital Campaign - 35.4% of our $2 million fundraising goal.
  • Campaign Donations: $363,311
  • Additional Pledged Donations: $315,823
  • Cathedral Chair Donations: $22,000
  • Pew Purchase Donations:$2,700
  • Quilt Signature Donations: $3,470
  • TOTAL:  $707,304 (35.4% Goal)
That's a great start, but we need to raise much more to do what must be done to upgrade our facilities. Renovations in the kitchen, parish hall, and administrative wing are nearly complete as renovations in the nave are in full swing! So, if you have been prayerfully thinking about making a pledge, now would be a great time to help us keep up with the expenses we are incurring and accelerate the progress toward reaching our goal. Please join the folks who have already pledged and/or made cash contributions to the campaign. Obtain a downloadable Capital Campaign Pledge Form by clicking THIS LINK

OUR CENTENNIAL PRAYER - Lord Christ, the shepherd of the sheep, we give thanks for those  who have built up the work of St. James over the past 100 years.

Give us grace to continue in their faithfulness
by doing justice and mercy in this community.

Grant us generous hearts to support and build the resources that will strengthen and continue our work of feeding and tending your sheep.

May we do all these things to your glory, you who reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Making the adjustment from our permanently installed audio visual equipment in the Nave to the completely different portable system being used in the Parish Hall has provided interesting challenges for everyone involved. This includes the A/V team responsible for setting things up every Sunday morning, everyone who steps up to the microphones to share the liturgy, and especially the congregation. Thanks to everyone for demonstrating patience and flexibility during these times of transition.

WATCH LINDA DENTON - Watch Linda Denton talk about why she is drawn to participate in the St. James St. Francis Guild by clicking the image to the left. During this recently recorded 9-minute video, Linda describes how the work is so rewarding to everyone involved in this gardening ministry group on several levels. St. Francis Guild volunteers plant and maintain our garden beds at St. James while striving to be good stewards of the earth. Neighbors in the community enjoy walking through and resting in the courtyard while enjoying the wonders of nature.

ATTENTION SOUP & SANDWICH MAKERS -  As we move forward to a new normal using part of the Parish Hall and the kitchen for our much appreciated food and fellowship time, the Helping Hands ministry group invites anyone who likes to cook, wants to be involved in outreach, or warm the cockles of someone's heart with food made with love to participate in the food portion of our ministry by making a pot of soup, sandwiches, breakfast casseroles, etc. A sign up sheet, with our distribution dates as well as some tried and true recipes is posted on the bulletin board outside Conference Room A. Currently, we are serving about 20 people each distribution day and provide chips, fruit, and dessert to accompany the main entree. Soup, sandwiches, etc. can be made at home and delivered to church on Friday or on Saturday morning. They can also be made in the kitchen at church on Saturday or you can just provide the ingredients and our kitchen team will do the cooking. Please contact Stacy Hall, our kitchen chair person srhall54@outlook.com or (865) 556-3153 for more information.

ECW EVENT CALENDAR - The Episcopal Church Women Ministry, (ECW), enjoys hands-on involvement in church life. We celebrate the children of St James and enjoy sponsoring parish-wide opportunities including the Rummage Sale, and events like the September picnic. In 2022 we hosted the Easter breakfast for the choir and others serving during the services plus the Easter hospitality time after church. The ECW lets our folks in the military know we are praying for and thinking about them by sending cards throughout the year and small gifts at Christmas.

Here is the planned remaining 2023 ECW schedule:
  • Doorstep – Helping Hands Lunch - TBD (chili lunch in the fall?)
  • Centennial Celebration/Luncheon – September 17
  • Rummage Sale – October 21
  • Trunk or Treat - Sunday, October 29
  • UTO Fall Offering – November 19
  • Marketplace/Bake Sale – November 12 or December 3

LOCAL NEEDS - Compassion Coalition, of which St. James is an active member, is transforming our city. It represents the body of Christ working together in unity to serve the greatest needs. These local needs have been identified by Compassion Coalition . . .
  • An elderly, disabled male veteran in the 37920 area is seeking assistance with moving into his new apartment. They live on a fixed income and have few belongings. If you can help, please contact Clarissa.Abbott@va.gov or call 423-767-2371.
  • A client with a new job needs an Uber card for bad weather days. She walks a mile to the bus stop in good weather, but because of health problems can not make the walk during stormy weather. If you can help please contact charmin@compassioncoalition.org.
  • A young single mom with severe health issues is in need of a tire for her car. The type of tire she needs is a 235/70/r16. If you can help, please contact kcrye@klf.org

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING - To quote Fr. John Mark, "good organization and administration is a caring, welcoming thing." Now that our ministry groups are returning to our renovated spaces, here are some housekeeping guidelines that will help us all pitch in so St. James will always be the welcoming place John Mark describes.
  1. Never prop an entrance/exit door open.
  2. If tables or chairs are moved, do so carefully to avoid creating scuff marks and return them to their original configuration.
  3. Wipe dirty tables & countertops with Pine Sol spray found near the trash can in the kitchen.
  4. Sweep up crumbs or debris using the broom & dust pan found near the trash can in the kitchen.
  5. Place bagged trash, (especially food scraps), in the trash can in the kitchen.
  6. Clean up spills or track marks on the floor using the water in the yellow mop bucket near the trash can in the kitchen.
  7. Rinse dirty dish ware so it is ready to be run through the dishwasher.

Every week, St. James generates a significant amount of paper, metal, and plastic recyclable waste. Fortunately, we have a team of committed volunteers who routinely collect and transport sorted recyclables to the local recycle center, including used church bulletins, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles.

CELEBRATING THE  ECW-SPONSORED "NO FUNDRAISER" - The Episcopal Church Women are delighted to tell you that, as a result of the phenomenal success of the No FUNdraiser FUNdraiser, St. James is helping seven kids and one adult have an unforgettable week at Grace Point Summer Camp. St. James parishioners contributed a total $5,335, including a gift of $500 made directly to Grace Point for operating expenses. Out of the $4,835 given specifically for scholarships, campers received $3,490 in aid. At the July ECW meeting, a decision will be made on how to use the remaining $1,345 to support campers in the future. The St. James ECW is extremely grateful to all of the youth and adults who gave us delightful and touching views of camp life; and to all of St. James for opening your hearts and wallets to make all of this possible. Now, don’t be at all surprised if we ask you to do NOTHING next year….!

THE SUNDAY PAPER JUNIOR is a publication shared with our younger children, (preschool through grade 3 or 4), during Children's Nursery. It features one of our weekly lessons, (usually the Gospel), offering big, bold artwork, a simple story line, and an activity page designed to stir children's imaginations and spirituality. It only requires a pencil or crayons (no glue or scissors). Copies of some of the July issues of The Sunday Paper Junior are posted here with permission of the author/illustrator, Gretchen Wolff Pritchard.  July 2July 9July 16.

The seating arrangement we currently enjoy in the Parish Hall provides a wonderful opportunity for all of us to see and acknowledge one another, even if only from across the room. It is so much more warmer than looking only at the back of the heads of everyone, or trying to catch only a brief glance when walking to or from the communion rail. It really helps to nourish our sense of community and church family.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT - Click the image above to watch the entire Diocese of East Tennessee Annual Pride Mass which took place on Sunday, June 25 at Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan. Preceding the service, a Reconciling Panel Discussion featured a conversation about the Rainbow Initiative: LGBTQ+ Refugee and Immigrant resettlement in the U.S. The panel members included Episcopal Bishop Brian Cole, Ms. Allison Duvall of Episcopal Migration Ministries, a representative of the U.S. State Department, Ms. Sinêad Love of Church of the Good Samaritan, and a representative of Bridge Refugee Services.

KROGER DONATIONS - The Kroger Co. Family of Stores is committed to bringing hope and help to the local neighborhoods we call home. Our stores are on a mission to not just part of, but to help create a stronger community. We recognize that every community has unique causes that need support. Thank you for being such an important organization in our community. We encourage you to ask your supporters to link their Community Rewards Card to St. James Episcopal Church. Community Rewards is easy to use. The more your supporters shop with us, the more money St. James will earn! We are committed to carefully protecting our customer's personal information. In order to meet their expectation of privacy, we have adopted a simple policy to never share a customer's personal information.

CAMP REPORT - Family Camp was held over Memorial Day weekend kicking off the summer season at our diocesan Grace Point Camp and Retreat Center. St. James was represented by Fr. John Mark, Liz, & Elliott Wiggers, Cat Dunning with Emily and Ben, and Margaret Bickley. John Mark and Elliott presented the morning program which included learning box breathing technique, discussion of Pentecost and the Holy Spirit’s descent as rushing wind and tongues of fire, and God’s blessing of making, knowing, loving, and being with us. Grace Point Junior Camp was held June 1-6 for rising 4-6th graders. St. James was represented by campers, Otis Moss, Zadie Teasley, counselor Elliott Wiggers, Mary Jon Steen, Mason Glossup, and nurse Margaret Bickley. There was plenty of swimming, tubing, kayaking, and canoeing plus lots of lakeside water games for the Wacky Woad Wace, and cabin competition which can be loud and rowdy. Archery, crafts, evening campfires with s’mores enthusiastic singing, and a short Compline service rounded out the camp activities. Ask our campers what they enjoyed most about camp.

The Altar Guild & Flower Guild teams are a busy bunch of folks these days as they are operating out of the kitchen, pantry, and children's chapel to create the same amount of brilliant color and tradition in the Parish Hall we are accustomed to having in the Nave. These committed volunteers enjoy fellowship with one another every time they get together on the weekend to make sure everything is taken care of before and after each service on Sunday mornings.

Just a reminder that there are a couple of ways to give online at St. James.

One way is to click the GIVING tab at our website - stjamesknox.org. This will open a menu of options. After selecting one of the options, you can make your gift by providing a valid email address and payment information. If you already have a Realm account, just log in and go to the Giving menu item on the left hand side of the screen.

Another way to give is by text. Just text the phrase “stjamesbroadway” to the number 73256, you’ll be directed to a giving portal to enter your information and make your gift. If your email address matches what we have on record, the amount will be added to your records on Realm.

About Your Records - You always have access to your own records. In order to retrieve them, you must first create a Realm account. From there, you can view your giving history as well as print them out for your own record keeping or tax purposes.

About Recurring Gifts - Since Realm is now the preferred method for online giving at St. James, previously established Vanco Direct donation accounts must be canceled and reset to create a new GIVING LINK through Realm. While this can be done relatively easily on your own, we would like to work with you to convert your account over to Realm. If you are the least bit unsure how to proceed, please contact Bob, bob@stjamesknox.org, 865-523-5687.

Planned Giving - also referred to as “legacy” giving - enables individuals to make larger gifts to St. James than they could make from ordinary income. A planned gift is a major gift made during a lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial or estate planning. Planned gifts include donations made through a will, gifts of equity from an IRA, life insurance, and/or gift trusts. By contrast, pledged gifts are made from a donor’s discretionary income. Pledges are included in the annual operational budget, but they are not assured. Whether donors provide cash, appreciated securities, stock, life insurance, a retirement plan, or some other valuable asset, the benefits of funding generated through a planned gift can make this type of charitable giving very attractive to both the donor and St. James. For more information, contact your Financial Advisor and let us know of the plan. Or, you can contact the St. James Financial Advisors:

Robert Williams - Registered Representative - Cetera Advisor Networks LLC, member FINRA/SIPC (865) 558-1779
