Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! There is so much to be thankful for. Thank you to everyone who filled out a pledge card or pledged online. This helps us plan for the future. If you have been giving online, we don't assume that you will continue at the same level. Please make a pledge and let us know your intention to give to our 2023 budget.
Our Neighbor Day Concert was a blast! So many volunteers helped make that event happen. Episcopal School of Knoxville donated the stage, and some of our folks transported it back and forth. Ushers helped bring people in, organizers promoted the event, and arranged for food. Thank you for spreading the word and inviting friends to join us.
Keep up the good work and spread the word about our neighbor day auction. Share it on social media or tell your friends about it. A donor has pledged to match gifts and sales up to $10,000. There is some great stuff in there. Check it out.
Giving thanks is a way of blessing. Did you know that the English translation of "Eucharist" is "thanksgiving" or "good gifts"? As we celebrate the Eucharist, we take the gifts and name them as good by giving thanks. In return, we receive from God. The gift we receive and learn to know is the presence of Christ. The good gifts we receive aren't limited to the formal sacraments. We know Christ in relationship, in friends, and in strangers. It isn't always easy for me to see Christ in others, I forget the truth and believe that I am separate from others. Then I return to thanksgiving. Whether in the course of my day or at the Great Thanksgiving, the Eucharist. There I am reminded of the oneness of all in Christ.
Thank you for being a community that gives thanks with your lips and in your actions. May know thanksgiving to be transformational to us and to others.
Peace,
Fr. John Mark
OUR HISTORY . . .
Psalm 131:1-2 - O Lord, I am not proud; I have no haughty looks; I do not occupy myself with great matters or with things that are too hard for me.
For the past several years I've researched me and my wife's family histories, discovering and documenting lives, relationships, high points of success, and very low points of slavery, poverty and medical distress. Common threads weaving through these African American experiences are humility, hard work, interdependence of family and neighbors, and the search for a safer, more rewarding life for children and grandchildren.
There does not seem to have been the space, most times, to occupy themselves with "great matters" though things that were hard seemed to have been the regular pattern of many lives. What becomes clearer and clearer to me as I research these lives is that the Lord walks with us through very difficult times with seemingly no end to the troubles we are facing. Jesus makes the point of eating with sinners because we're all sinners. No need for pride or haughty looks; just faith in our loving Lord. Source: Forward Day by Day
THE PRESENT . . .
GROUNDS FOR REUNION . . . "Coffee Hour" has returned to St. James following our regular 10:30 Sunday morning worship services. If you would like to lend a hand as a host, there will be a sign up sheet available during each coffee hour event. Duties are minimal and include setting things up and preparing coffee in the church kitchen and light cleanup activities afterwards. This week's hosts are John and Merrilee Kerwin. Because the Parish Hall is filled with purchased Neighbor Day items from Saturday night, we will be using the hallways, Conference Room A and the Courtyard. Please remember, payment & pickup of purchased auction items will take place next week beginning on MONDAY. We had a great crowd for our coffee hour last Sunday so come join in and visit with your St. James family. Contact Carol Yates at cyates0222@gmail.com with questions or to sign up.
CONCERT SNAPSHOTS . . . A gathering of more than 75 neighbors, including approximately 1/3 of whom were not affiliated with St. James, assembled for our 2nd annual Neighbor Day Concert in the Park(ing lot) last night . Sean McCollough, our featured artist, performed the surprising history of Appalachian Music while the Pristine Hospitality and Bake that Dough food trucks provided delicious food and beverages to add to the enjoyment. Click the images below to see if you can find yourself in the crowd.

OUR FUTURE . . .
FLOWERS NEEDED - It is a St. James tradition to place altar flowers/greenery in honor of or in thanksgiving for loved ones. Altar flowers/greenery are needed for October 23, & 30, November 6, 20, & 27, and December 4 & 18. Please contact the church office for information, lgoins@stjamesknox.org or 865-523-5687.
SPONSOR A CHAIR - Soon, our old pews will be replaced with new cathedral chairs which are being built especially for St. James. Each chair will be made from solid oak with a wood back and an upholstered seat. They will also have front & rear book racks along with comfortable kneelers. These chairs will offer much greater flexibility in seating arrangements. Five or six chairs aligned in a row and secured with ganging clamps will retain the look and feel of traditional pews.
Family, friends, and organizations are invited to "sponsor" individual chairs by making a $500 cash contribution to St. James Episcopal Church specifically designated for this purpose. In exchange for your cash contribution, the backside of each chair you sponsor will be fitted with an engraved brass plate, (approximately 5" W x 2.5" H), commemorating your gift. The engraved message may memorialize a loved one, or recognize someone else of your choosing. The flexible arrangement of our new chairs in the Nave will ensure your thoughtfulness and the person(s) you memorialize will be noticed by a much wider audience than brass plates affixed to the ends of traditional stationary pews.
Please click THIS LINK to access the form you may use to sponsor a chair and submit a payment. If you have additional questions about sponsoring one or more cathedral chairs, please contact kevin@stjamesknox.org or jwiggers@stjamesknox.org for more details.
OUR CENTENNIAL PRAYER
Lord Christ, the shepherd of the sheep, we give thanks for those
who have built up the work of St. James over the past 100 years.
Give us grace to continue in their faithfulness
by doing justice and mercy in this community.
Grant us generous hearts to support and build the resources
that will strengthen and continue our work of feeding and tending your sheep.
May we do all these things to your glory, you who reign with the Father and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
