October 2, 2022 8 am - Holy Eucharist – Rite I
9:15 am - Adult Christian Formation 10:30 am - Holy Eucharist – Rite II
10:45 am - Children Christian Formation
Have I mentioned that we have started coffee hour again? Join us after the 10:30 service to connect with fellow parishioners. We are keeping it simple and letting the conversation and community nourish us. This is a special time for folks at St. James. I am so glad to be doing it again. Butch and Carol Yates are heading up this revival and may be asking you to join in the set-up and clean-up.
We have other opportunities to come together in the next week as well. This Sunday we will bring our pledge cards forward to the altar so that we might bless those intentions to give. The card you received in the mail didn't have a place to fill in the amount of your pledge even though several of us looked that over (only God is perfect.) Please consider what you can give and bring a pledge card or make your pledge online.
This Sunday afternoon we will gather to bless animals in the courtyard. Bring your pets (properly restrained.) Invite friends and neighbors to this special time.
On Tuesday night we will have our Neighbor Day concert in the park(ing lot)! Bring a chair and join the fun. See the announcement in this email for more details. Of course, we are in the midst of our Neighbor Day auction. I have made some bids have you? Share the link with friends, strangers, and enemies. Join the fun online on October 8 as we have a live stream to close out the auction.
Those are just a few of the ways we can connect and share. Heavy on my mind of late is how the sacrament of the Eucharist holds up our connection to each other and all of creation. We don't often see that connection. So many things in our lives and in our world cause us to see separation. Christ is reconciling us to God and to each other. We are invited to be a part of that mission that God has. From the altar, we go to reveal and name that unity over coffee, at a concert, and while raising funds to support the ministries that help us feed and tend God's sheep.
Come to the table and know that you are connected to the Body of Christ.
Peace,
Fr. John Mark
THE PRESENT . . .
Revelation 12:7a - And war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon.
Today is the feast of St. Michael & All Angels. Michael is an archangel, sometimes referred to as "the great captain" or leader of all angels. In this passage from Revelations, even though the dragon and his angels fought back, they were defeated. Ah, angels. Our culture is fascinated by them. "You are an angel!" we sometimes say to a friend or even a stranger. Images of angels can be found in garden statues, on sweatshirts, refrigerator magnets, and even night lights. I didn't pay much attention to angels until a friend described angels as "messengers". That brought me up short. I started to think about the idea that were beings in our midst bringing us messages from God. I began to pray, "Lord, may I meet your messengers today, and may I have the good sense to recognize them. And may I be a messenger too." Since starting to say that prayer, I have had many encounters that can only be described as a meeting with a messenger. I am now much more cognizant of messengers - and messages - in our midst. BACK BY PURCULATED DEMAND . . . "Coffee Hour" has returned to St. James. Following our regular 10:30 Sunday morning worship services, if you would like to lend a hand as a host, there will be a sign up sheet available during each coffee hour event. Duties include setting things up and preparing coffee in the church kitchen and light cleanup activities afterwards. We had a great crowd for our inaugural coffee hour last Sunday so come join in and visit with your St. James family. Contact Carol Yates at cyates0222@gmail.com with questions or to sign up.

You can be a matching donor too! Simply contact Kevin or Drew at jeskepolyak@gmail.com and let us know the maximum amount you will match and whether or not you prefer to remain anonymous. You can match up to hundreds of dollars, thousands of dollars, or tens of thousands of dollars! ANNUAL PLEDGE INGATHERING: It's that time of year again. The busy summer months are slowing down, the weather is getting colder and St. James is ramping up for our fall stewardship drive. Many of our members make increased contributions during this time, and we appreciate your gifts. On Sunday, Oct 2 we will collect pledge cards at the altar. Please indicate what you intend to give for the year by downloading a Pledge Card from THIS LINK, writing it on the printed card, and submitting it to the church. You can also give using our website.
BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS - This time of year, people in various places may notice something odd. A procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets. This custom is conducted in remembrance of Saint Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. St. Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, loved the larks flying about his hilltop town. He and his early brothers, staying in a small hovel, allowed themselves to be displaced by a donkey. Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things. “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.” And there was testimony in the cause for Saint Clare of Assisi’s canonization that referred to her little cat! This year we will celebrate his life by honoring our pets on Sunday, October 2nd, 3:00 pm, in the Courtyard. Please use proper restraints for your creature. We will also collect items for Young Williams Animal Shelter. They are in need of office supplies (copier paper, Sharpies), cat litter, newspaper, large blankets, and cat and dog toys. Join us as we celebrate our friends and how they show God's love to us.
CHILDREN'S MINISTRY - Classes have begun again, two classes are available. Both classes are offered during the 10:30 am Service for youth ages 5-8 and pre-teens age 9-13. Contact our Children's Formation Coordinator, Theresa Russell for additional information, tde444@yahoo.com.
YOUTH EVENTS - St. James Episcopal Church is in the process of developing a youth program that will re-energize the children and teen programs. In the meantime, St. James participates in The Episcopal Youth Community of the Diocese of East Tennessee, ETNyouth, a passionate and dedicated group of youth from over 50 worshiping communities throughout East Tennessee. This Fall, ETNYouth is holding great programs that may be of interest to you and your children. November 11-13, Happening #82, a spiritual awakening and renewal weekend for high school students, grades 9-12. November 18-20, College Retreat. All events are at Grace Point Camp. For additional information review The Episcopal Youth Community website at this LINK. For information and assistance with scholarships, please contact Fr. John Mark Wiggers, jwiggers@stjamesknox.org.
PROGRESSIVE SUPRANUCLEAR PALSY - The family of Michael Scott Teets, and especially his spouse Sharon, wish to thank the many members of St. James who have encouraged them through his battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, and then in the wonderful participation in the funeral service on Sunday, the 18th. There are just no words to express the gratitude, but St. James people . . . no one quite like them! Thanks so very much to all who helped to make the day special - clergy, church staff, musicians and choir, ushers, Altar Guild, Funeral Committee, lectors, eucharistic ministers, Daughters of the King, and all who participated. Scott would have been humbled and pleased.
YOUTH MINISTRIES LEADERSHIP MEETING - The Diocese of East Tennessee is calling all youth to apply to be a Youth Representative at the Province IV Youth Ministries Leadership and Network Meeting, December 1-4, 2022, at The Cathedral Domain, in Irving, KY. Three youth for the Diocese of East Tennessee will attend this conference to listen to one another, share ideas and develop ministry opportunities for Province IV which is made up of 20 dioceses in the Southeastern United States. Applications are due Oct 1, click this LINK for the application.
OUR FUTURE . . .
FLOWERS NEEDED - It is a St. James tradition to place altar flowers/greenery in honor of or in thanksgiving for loved ones. Altar flowers/greenery are needed for October 23, & 30, November 6, 20, & 27, and December 4 & 18. Please contact the church office for information, lgoins@stjamesknox.org or 865-523-5687.
SPONSOR A CHAIR - Soon, our old pews will be replaced with new cathedral chairs which are being built especially for St. James. Each chair will be made from solid oak with a wood back and an upholstered seat. They will also have front & rear book racks along with comfortable kneelers. These chairs will offer much greater flexibility in seating arrangements. Five or six chairs aligned in a row and secured with ganging clamps will retain the look and feel of traditional pews.
Family, friends, and organizations are invited to "sponsor" individual chairs by making a $500 cash contribution to St. James Episcopal Church specifically designated for this purpose. In exchange for your cash contribution, the backside of each chair you sponsor will be fitted with an engraved brass plate, (approximately 5" W x 2.5" H), commemorating your gift. The engraved message may memorialize a loved one, or recognize someone else of your choosing. The flexible arrangement of our new chairs in the Nave will ensure your thoughtfulness and the person(s) you memorialize will be noticed by a much wider audience than brass plates affixed to the ends of traditional stationary pews.
Please click THIS LINK to access the form you may use to sponsor a chair and submit a payment. If you have additional questions about sponsoring one or more cathedral chairs, please contact kevin@stjamesknox.org or jwiggers@stjamesknox.org for more details.
OUR CENTENNIAL PRAYER
Lord Christ, the shepherd of the sheep, we give thanks for those
who have built up the work of St. James over the past 100 years.
Give us grace to continue in their faithfulness
by doing justice and mercy in this community.
Grant us generous hearts to support and build the resources
that will strengthen and continue our work of feeding and tending your sheep.
May we do all these things to your glory, you who reign with the Father and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
