Dear Friends,

Another month begins! We are approaching Labor Day which has come to mean the official end of summer for so many. From the name of the day, we can gather that it is indeed about celebrating the contributions of workers in various fields. I celebrate Labor Day as a revelation of Christ working in the world. The changes that brought safer working conditions, reduced child labor, and better wages is an example of Good News to the oppressed. Let us celebrate and also pray for those who labor.

We labor on as we work in our community to spread the Good News of hope and liberation. It won't be too long before you get a call from our Justice Knox team leaders inviting you to a house meeting. Our Doorstep Ministry group is seeing record numbers of requests for snack bags. Our prison ministry group has resumed visits and group meetings at Morgan County Prison. These and other ministries are ways we reach out to folks and share God's love.

In worship, we bring the fruits of our labor and offer them at the altar. Have you noticed that as we bless the bread and wine we leave the offering plates and the Helping Hands Ministry group basket on the table? We do that as a symbol that those things are also blessed. Those tokens that represent our work are blessed, broken, and used to continue to bless others. Thank you for your labor of loving, and giving to make St. James a community that welcomes all.

Peace,
Fr. John Mark

OUR PAST . . .

100 YEARS OF MINISTRY - A special audio/video project is being produced this summer to commemorate our centennial as a Parish. "100 Years of Ministry at St. James" will feature recorded voices of parishioners sharing some of the history, impressions, and the ongoing work of our ministry over the years. Our goal is to record at least 50 interviews between now and the end of August. The first stage of the project will produce a beautifully edited 100-minute AUDIO file that will be completed by the end of September. Parts of the finished audio file will be shared during our Neighbor Day Celebration (Sep/Oct) and during the Old North Knoxville Holiday Home Tour (Dec 3 & 4). The second stage of the project will result in a wonderfully produced 100-minute VIDEO that will include photos and other graphics to enhance the texture of the storyline developed in the first stage. Specific portions of the final video will be shared in various ways throughout our continued Centennial Celebration in 2023.

BONUS TRACKS - Here are two additional "bonus" audio tracks recorded this week by Mary Muir using our Centennial Sentiments phone line. Please consider calling 865-357-0703 and sharing some of your sentiments.

THE PRESENT . . .

Psalm 37:5. Commit your way to the Lord and put your trust in him, and he will bring it to pass.

Joan Didion's A Year of Magical Thinking begins with this line: "Life changes in the instant. An ordinary instant." I think of those words often. We do not know what tomorrow will bring. There may be a birth or a death. There may be a surprise in the mail or a knock at the door. We may think we know what will come in the days ahead but none of use, no matter how rich or how wise, can really know what tomorrow will brink. What are we to do with this terrible and wonderful truth? Jesus shows us. His ministry is filled with prayer. He frequently withdraws from everyone so that he can spend time in prayer. he prays at meals, after healings, and at times of bid decisions. The future is full of uncertainty. I find that unpleasant and maybe you do, too. But when we commit to the Lord and follow his practice of prayer, then we can take comfort in knowing that Jesus is with us. As Jesus said, "I am with you always, to the end of the age." He was with me yesterday, is today, and will be there, beside me, tomorrow. source: Forward Day by Day

OUR FUTURE . . .

SPONSOR A CHAIR - Soon, our old pews will be replaced with new cathedral chairs which are being built especially for St. James. Each chair will be made from solid oak with a wood back and an upholstered seat. They will also have front & rear book racks along with comfortable kneelers. These chairs will offer much greater flexibility in seating arrangements. Five or six chairs aligned in a row and secured with ganging clamps will retain the look and feel of traditional pews.

Family, friends, and organizations are invited to "sponsor" individual chairs by making a $500 cash contribution to St. James Episcopal Church specifically designated for this purpose. In exchange for your cash contribution, the backside of each chair you sponsor will be fitted with an engraved brass plate, (approximately 5" W x 2.5" H), commemorating your gift. The engraved message may memorialize a loved one, or recognize someone else of your choosing. The flexible arrangement of our new chairs in the Nave will ensure your thoughtfulness and the person(s) you memorialize will be noticed by a much wider audience than brass plates affixed to the ends of traditional stationary pews.

Please click THIS LINK to access the form you may use to sponsor a chair and submit a payment. If you have additional questions about sponsoring one or more cathedral chairs, please contact kevin@stjamesknox.org or jwiggers@stjamesknox.org for more details.

OUR CENTENNIAL PRAYER

Lord Christ, the shepherd of the sheep, we give thanks for those
who have built up the work of St. James over the past 100 years.

Give us grace to continue in their faithfulness
by doing justice and mercy in this community.

Grant us generous hearts to support and build the resources
that will strengthen and continue our work of feeding and tending your sheep.

May we do all these things to your glory, you who reign with the Father and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
