Dear Friends,

Is there a hint of autumn in the air? The change of seasons is quite gradual and yet can seem rather sudden. So it is with much of life. I know in the practice of ministry I can sometimes feel that I am doing all the right things and not seeing results. Then there is that moment that confirms that steadiness and faithfulness bear fruit. This is true in the spiritual life as I might pray and practice and not always sense the presence of God in my life. This is all OK. Saints before have witnessed to an ebb and flow in the life of faith. We know changing seasons within and without.

At St. James we move toward the close of the liturgical year, we seek members to serve on vestry, we ask for financial commitments to next year's budget. We also move toward Neighbor Day events, a parish picnic, and restoring activities forestalled by COVID. This may well come on us like the seasons, gradually building and then revealing some new thing, some new way of seeing.

I want to particularly ask you to look around and see who might be a good candidate to serve on our vestry. It is required that Vestry members are confirmed and give to the church. Who do you think would be good on this team of folks who make decisions on the temporal matters of the congregation?

This is also the time of year that we will be asking folks to make a pledge for our 2023 budget. Indeed we are asking for this commitment during the time that we are also seeking support for our capital campaign. One supports the day to day operation, and one builds up resources that support our ministry together. Thank you for your generosity for supporting St. James.

Finally, I want to again say thank you for all the support and prayers offered on the occasion of my father's death. Many of you know how meaningful it is to have those kind words, cards, and prayers during a time like this. I am reminded of the support I have in this season of my life. Thank you.

Peace,
Fr. John Mark

OUR PAST . . .

100 YEARS OF MINISTRY - A special audio/video project is being produced this summer to commemorate our centennial as a Parish. "100 Years of Ministry at St. James" will feature recorded voices of parishioners sharing some of the history, impressions, and the ongoing work of our ministry over the years. Our goal is to record at least 50 interviews between now and the end of August. The first stage of the project will produce a beautifully edited 100-minute AUDIO file that will be completed by the end of September. Parts of the finished audio file will be shared during our Neighbor Day Celebration (Sep/Oct) and during the Old North Knoxville Holiday Home Tour (Dec 3 & 4). The second stage of the project will result in a wonderfully produced 100-minute VIDEO that will include photos and other graphics to enhance the texture of the storyline developed in the first stage. Specific portions of the final video will be shared in various ways throughout our continued Centennial Celebration in 2023.

Click the links below to listen to audio excerpts extracted from recent recorded interviews which are a part of this project.
  1. Lee Creech - "going to ask you the same thing" 1:23
  2. John Mark Wiggers - "why St. James" 1:08
  3. Stacy Hall - "Justice Knox - numbers matter" 1:00
  4. Carol Yates - "why events fun" 0:32
  5. Rick Brown - "events" 0:30
BONUS TRACKS - Here are two additional "bonus" audio tracks recorded this week by Mary Muir using our Centennial Sentiments phone line. Please consider calling 865-357-0703 and sharing some of your sentiments.

THE PRESENT . . .

John 7:14-15. About the middle of the festival Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach. The Jews were astonished at it, saying, "How does this man have such learning, when he has never been taught?"

Book learning is very different from experience. Theories about teaching take flight when you're faced with a class of rowdy students. Until your hands are covered with flour, you haven't truly understood a recipe. In short, experience counts, no matter what. There is no question that Jesus has learned Mosaic Law, but he also teaches with his own authority. As he says, "My teaching is not mine but his who sent me." Even though Jesus has been guided by the greatest teacher of all, his accusers are amazed, asking, "How does this man have such learning?" Unlike them, he follows the spirit, not the letter, of the law. They, however, judge by rules and regulations. Because they are angry that he cared for others and healed on the sabbath, their search for the Messiah is in vain. If we are to learn one of Jesus's greatest lessons, we will experience Christ by reaching out to others, putting mercy above all else. In that way, we follow the embodiment of God's will. source: Forward Day by Day

FEED THE MOEMENT . . . Coach Mark Abell and the St. James Centennial Centipedes have already begun training to hit the ground serving some of the greatest Tex-Mex cuisine available in Knoxville at UT home games in Neyland Stadium beginning with the season opener NEXT Thursday, Sep 1. The food and beverages will be provided by Moe's Southwest Grill, including Moe's delicious burritos! Visit our Moe's concession stand at Neyland Stadium by Gate 24, (operated by St. James parishioners), Sep 1, 17, 24, Oct 15, 22, 29, and Nov 12 to purchase refreshments for your entire group. Ten percent of all sales generated through our stand will be donated directly to St. James on each of these dates. Special thanks to Coach Abell and the entire group of St. James Volunteers who are donating their time to help raise money to support our ministry in this way. Go Centipedes and GO VOLS!

This Fall, ETNYouth is holding great programs that may be of interest to you and your children. September 9-11, ENTYouth Fall Retreat for youth grades 6-12. November 11-13, Happening #82, a spiritual awakening and renewal weekend for high school students, grades 9-12. Several of our Centennial Centipedes have already attended the 3 hour training that Aramark requires and we have learned standards & expectations for customer service, food safety, inventory management, money handling procedures and more, OH MY!  Our work days will be 8-10 hours long (and, hopefully much fun, since we’re working at home UT football game). If you attend one or more home games this season, please stop by to yell "Go VOLS!" and let us serve you! Remember, 10% of all sales generated through our concession stand will be donated in cash to support our St. James ministry. OUR FUTURE . . .

THE GOOD SHEPHERD'S COTTAGE - During last year's Neighbor Day auction, one lucky participant acquired this beautiful Matted Collector's Print of "The Good Shepherd's Cottage" by Thomas Kinkade. In this edition of The St. James Sentinel, the print is adorned with the names of those who have contributed to the St. James Centennial Capital Campaign thus far.  "The Good Shepherd's Cottage" is an allegory in paint and image of the Lord returning to call in His faithful. His house is an utterly comfortable and secure cottage, radiant with light. The air is luminous with sunset; the sound of His voice thrilling as He calls His sheep into a verdant meadow.  If you have not yet made your pledge to the campaign, please consider doing by downloadingPAPER PLEDGE FORM, or by accessing our ONLINE PLEDGE FORM.  To view greater detail of the print without the names, click the image or THIS LINK.

SPONSOR A CHAIR - Soon, our old pews will be replaced with new cathedral chairs which are being built especially for St. James. Each chair will be made from solid oak with a wood back and an upholstered seat. They will also have front & rear book racks along with comfortable kneelers. These chairs will offer much greater flexibility in seating arrangements. Five or six chairs aligned in a row and secured with ganging clamps will retain the look and feel of traditional pews.

Family, friends, and organizations are invited to "sponsor" individual chairs by making a $500 cash contribution to St. James Episcopal Church specifically designated for this purpose. In exchange for your cash contribution, the backside of each chair you sponsor will be fitted with an engraved brass plate, (approximately 5" W x 2.5" H), commemorating your gift. The engraved message may memorialize a loved one, or recognize someone else of your choosing. The flexible arrangement of our new chairs in the Nave will ensure your thoughtfulness and the person(s) you memorialize will be noticed by a much wider audience than brass plates affixed to the ends of traditional stationary pews.

Please click THIS LINK to access the form you may use to sponsor a chair and submit a payment. If you have additional questions about sponsoring one or more cathedral chairs, please contact kevin@stjamesknox.org or jwiggers@stjamesknox.org for more details.

OUR CENTENNIAL PRAYER

Lord Christ, the shepherd of the sheep, we give thanks for those
who have built up the work of St. James over the past 100 years.

Give us grace to continue in their faithfulness
by doing justice and mercy in this community.

Grant us generous hearts to support and build the resources
that will strengthen and continue our work of feeding and tending your sheep.

May we do all these things to your glory, you who reign with the Father and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
