Greetings,

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.” Isaiah 52:7 (NRSV)

In these mountains in East Tennessee, St. James has been declaring Good News for almost 100 years. We will officially kick-off our celebration of this anniversary on Sunday, June 19. I hope you can join us in the parish hall following the 10:30 service where we will share more about our capital campaign. This is just the beginning of our celebration. I pray that we will celebrate our history and move forward into the future with hope.

Sunday is also Juneteenth, the holiday that celebrates the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation reaching Texas in 1865 after the proclamation itself was made in January 1863. It took some time for that good news to spread and be applied. That is a reminder to me that we continue in the work of spreading hope, peace, and salvation. I find strength in sharing that work with you.

In celebrating our centennial we have opportunities to share stories of our past. Those stories remind us of the faithfulness that brought us this present. We don't simply linger in reminiscence and nostalgia. Our story continues as we strive to do justice, love mercy, and humbly walk with God. Our capital campaign to enhance the facilities that support our ministry are a part of that story. The larger story unfolds as pray, study, and serve together.

I celebrate that St. James is a community that continues to spread Good News in word and deed. Telling our story helps us see and give thanks for God present in our story. Your story of finding grace, hope, and community is a piece of that larger story. We tell our stories because there are those who don't know that grace, who are in need of healing, and who long for a community in which to belong. May our feet be beautiful as we share the message of Christ's love.

Peace,
Fr. John Mark
OUR PAST . . .

100 YEARS OF MINISTRY - As part of our year long centennial celebration, a special video is being produced this summer to commemorate the occasion. "100 Years of Ministry at St. James" will feature the recorded voices of parishioners sharing some of the history and ongoing work performed by the various groups within the ministry at St. James. The final edited video will also feature a collection of images to help illustrate their groups.

Currently, we are seeking at least one individual from each ministry group to sit for a comfortable recorded 15-minute conversation, (audio only), with Kevin. These conversations will take place in the Library by appointment at convenient times during the week, or on the weekend if necessary.  Ideally, all of the conversations will be recorded prior to July 31st to allow time for editing. The great thing about audio recordings is the ability to select the best segments and edit them together in a seamless fashion. Please suggest some times that would work for you to talk about the ministry group(s) with which you are associated. Contact Kevin at kevin@stjamesknox.org. What a GIFT your spoken word will provide to our congregation for many years to come!

FATHER'S DAY is a holiday to honor fatherhood and paternal bonds, as well as the influence of fathers in society. In Catholic countries of Europe, it has been celebrated as "St. Joseph's Day" on March 19 since the Middle Ages. In the U.S., "Father's Day" was founded by Sonora Smart Dodd, who held her father in great esteem. While hearing a church sermon about the newly recognized "Mother's Day" at Central Methodist Episcopal Church, Sonora felt strongly that fatherhood needed recognition as well. She approached the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and suggested her own father's birthday, of June 5, as the day of honor for fathers. It  was celebrated on the third Sunday of June for the first time in 1910.
THE PRESENT . . .

JUSTICE KNOX CELEBRATION - Justice Knox team and network members joined together for the annual Justice Knox Celebration on June 13 at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Fountain City. Food and fellowship began with a boxed supper picnic followed by a program to celebrate the success of the recent, (May 2), Nehemiah Action Assembly during which public officials responded “yes” to all 3 Justice Knox issue campaigns:
  • For Public Transportation, KAT Director Isaac Thorne affirmed his commitment to specific next steps in designing a plan for a micro-transit option for Knoxville and to work with Justice Knox leaders to recommend such a plan to Mayor Kincannon by March 2023.
  • For Gun Violence, Mayor Kincannon, District Attorney General Charme Allen, and Knox County Sheriff Tom Spangler committed to work collaboratively to “create a comprehensive plan for violence reduction.”
  • And for Education, outgoing Superintendent Thomas agreed to facilitate a meeting between Justice Knox and incoming Superintendent Rysewyk to ensure that the progress made in regards to restorative practices in Knox County Schools will continue.

PARISH PICNIC - Celebrating 100 years of women's contributions to St. James, the Episcopal Church Women will host a St. James Parish Family Picnic on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 11 am in the Parish Hall & Playground. The ECW will provide protein and beverages and you are invited to bring your favorite PICNIC dish! Please let us know you're coming and what you are planning to bring by calling the church office (865-523-5687) or signing up after church, June 26, or July 3. Download the picnic flier at THIS LINK. For more information, please contact Kitty McNamara (865-310-3065) or Nancy Pullen (415-722-0139).

PUZZLING OUTREACH -  One of the the characteristics that distinguishes St. James from other parishes is its active engagement in outreach to our neighbors. Click THIS LINK to open and print your word find puzzle featuring 12 outreach groups supported by St. James either through direct involvement, or by providing meeting space. Words in the puzzle can go in any direction and/or cross over each other. The groups featured in the puzzle are listed at the bottom of the page. If you solve the puzzle, let kevin@stjamesknox.org know so he can refer others who get "stuck" to you for assistance. :)

DON'T FORGET - The deadline for our Shepherd's Voice newsletter articles, ministry task assignments, calendar updates, special event notifications, and other content is the 3rd MONDAY of each month.  Please submit your "publish ready" articles to Linda Goins lgoins@stjamesknox.org this week to beat the Monday deadline!

A PLACE AT THE TABLE - provides hot meals and necessities to the homeless and those on the margins in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. Now, St. James parishioners have the opportunity to participate in this ministry in collaboration with our neighbors at St. John's Lutheran Church (544 N. Broadway). Some of those served are chronically homeless. Others work but cannot afford housing, or are in the process of obtaining housing, but all are hungry and in need of food. On Monday nights from 5:30 pm - 7 pm, hot meals and necessities such as hygiene items, laundry detergent, toilet paper, socks, and undergarments are provided with a warm smile and an attitude of respect. If you are interested in serving, please contact TJ Blasing at t.j.blasing@gmail.com (865-288-3180) or show up at St. John's around 5:15 on a Monday night and ask for TJ or Lois.

CHILDREN'S CHAPEL - St. James Children's Chapel is currently meeting every 2 weeks on Sunday mornings from 10:45 am - 11:15 am during the 10:30 morning worship service. The next two dates are Jun 26, & Jul 10. The group will not meet on Jul 24. The St. James Children’s Chapel Team is dedicated to the spiritual growth and development of our children ages four to eleven through study and dialogue in a group setting. In a room dedicated to children’s Christian formation, volunteer instructors review planned lessons and coordinate activities to interact with the children. Bibles and other materials needed for these activities are provided.
OUR FUTURE . . .

EXHIBITION THIS SUNDAY - Come see the exhibits that will be on display in the Parish Hall following the 10:30 am morning worship service this Sunday. Examine the planned upgrades & improvements illustrated in architectural renderings, including renovation of nave, parish hall, & kitchen, installation of an elevator lift, replacement of the HVAC system & windows, expansion of our columbarium, exterior cleaning & stucco repair, and sealing of the parking lot. Test the comfort of a solid oak cathedral chair with an upholstered seat just like the ones currently being built for St. James by skilled craftspeople in Beatrice, Nebraska. Pick up your copy of our 12-page color brochure providing full details related to the purpose of our centennial capital campaign and how you can invest in our future. While you are there, talk to the members of our capital campaign committee and treat yourself to some ice cream & coffee!

OUR CENTENNIAL PRAYER

Lord Christ, the shepherd of the sheep,
we give thanks for those
who have built up the work
of St. James over the past 100 years.

Give us grace to continue in their faithfulness
by doing justice and mercy in this community.

Grant us generous hearts
to support and build the resources
that will strengthen and continue our work
of feeding and tending your sheep.

May we do all these things to your glory,
you who reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever. Amen.

MAKING YOUR CENTENNIAL PLEDGE - Investing in the future of our ministry at St. James begins by making a pledge to our centennial capital campaign.
