Dear Friends,

Many of you don't get to see all that happens around the St. James campus during the week. Pre-COVID, someone was using our space almost daily. We are beginning to share our space again. It is a joy to offer meeting space for recovery groups, local non-profits, and other community groups. That is one of our quiet ministries to our community. I love it when I tell someone that I am from St. James and they reply that they attended a recovery group, or that their organization is so grateful for being able to meet here.

This week, the place is abuzz with the work of the Episcopal Church Women as they prepare for our rummage sale this Saturday, April 2. WOW! There is so much stuff! Tell your friends, neighbors, and strangers. I know that the ECW puts these funds to good use by supporting ministries of our congregation, sending kids to Grace Point camp, and helping out the Clergy Discretionary Fund. Thanks for that support. Come and contribute to the cause.

Our actual physical space supports us as we share the love of Christ. That is something we might not think about very often. I am excited about some of the plans that are developing to improve our space. It won't be long until we have drawings to share and will ask for your support in making some improvements as we celebrate 100 years of ministry.

Lent is a season that helps us make some spiritual space. We let go of some attachments and enter into prayer. Holy Week approaches. I hope that you will make time to join in Holy Week and Easter services. Your clergy are available for the Rite of the Reconciliation of a Penitent by appointment. Make some space to know Christ working in you.

Thank you for making space for me and others to belong in the community.

Peace,
Fr. John Mark
OUR HISTORY . . .

OUR STAINED GLASS WINDOWS - I have received more requests about our stained glass windows than any other, especially from those who visit us.  Since I originally had very little information to go by, I decided to do some investigating.  Then, while several of us were cleaning the attic, we discovered over 50 boxes of archived materials.  Contained in those boxes was information about the windows.  What a treasure they have become!

One of the more interesting facts is that our first window was not installed until 1950 – nearly 23 years after the church building was completed. In an upcoming newsletter, we will learn more about our windows and the role St. James played in making them a reality. - from your Church Historian, Frank Laszlo.

JANE CLIFT -  Recently, Jane Clift shared a wonderful St. James Centennial Sentiment.  Click THIS LINK to listen to one of her lifelong memories.

Then, call 865-357-0703 to share one of your own stories about some of the wonderful ways you have seen St. James perform God's work and some of the many challenges we have faced through the years.

A recorded greeting will invite you to tell your story over the phone. Each recorded story will be saved and added to a special collection at our website at THIS LINK.  Selected stories will also be featured in upcoming editions of the St. James Sentinel.

Celebrating 100 years of feeding and tending God’s sheep in 2023.

"ALL CALL" FOR MASSAQUOI - The Massaquoi Family is requesting photos of all works of art created by Uncle Fritz during his lifetime.  If you are in possession of one (or more) of these treasures, please email photos directly to Wokie Massaquoi-Wicks wokie18@gmail.com. The family is planning to include them as part of a major exhibit at The Emporium. Featuring more than 40 works created over a 60-year span, Fritz Massaquoi (1926-2022): In Memoriam pays tribute to the long and prolific career of a West African multi-media artist who spent his last three decades in Knoxville. The exhibit will be on display for the entire month of April.
THE PRESENT . . .

HANDBELL FESTIVAL - Everyone at St. James is cordially invited to attend the Smoky Mountain Ring Handbell Festival concert on Saturday, April 2 at 4 pm at the Grace Lutheran Church, (9076 Middlebrook Pike).  The goal is to provide an educational event in a multi-choir environment. Bell ringing provides common ground for people who might otherwise not have anything to bring them together. This event will include ten area handbell choirs, including The St. James Handbell Choir, who will ring together as one cohesive, musical ensemble. The concert will be about 45 minutes in length and is free and open to the public.

JUSTICE KNOX RALLY - Justice Ministry network members are reminded that the Annual Rally is Apr 4 at 7 pm at Church Street United Methodist Church.

This rally is one of the events network members commit to attend and is important as we will hear what we will be asking for at our Nehemiah Action.

Come join us for this event that leads to our Nehemiah Action on May 2.

BEVERLY W WINS - Beverly W is the lucky winner of a free $5 K-Brew gift card because she was among the Sentinel readers who clicked THIS LINK to visit the new St. James website this past week. If you have not already visited our new site, check it out today.  Access your "Forward Day-by-Day" daily meditation, our live & recorded video streams, the activities calendar, and timely articles related to our worship & spirituality, neighbor outreach, inreach & pastoral care, fellowship, fundraising, and history.

PALM SUNDAY PARADE: Bring your own noise maker and join the parade when we celebrate Palm Sunday on April 10th at 10:30 am.  After we gather in the courtyard for the blessing of palms, we will take a raucous walk and then process into church to continue our worship as we begin Holy Week. Our tradition will continue on Easter Sunday, (Apr 17), when we observe the custom of ringing bells when we say "Alleluia."  Bring your own bell or ring one of the small bells that will be provided.

CHECK THE STATS - Not everything we do in life or in our ministries can be monitored or measured. Still, there are many things that can.  When we take the time to collect and examine the data, it can cause us to think about what we are doing and inspire us to consider doing some things differently.  In this and future Sentinel articles, statistical information and trends related to population growth, age groups, cultures, economic indicators, education levels, family structure, and housing types, within a 3 mile radius of St. James will be presented for consideration by the entire congregation.

Family Types

Married Couples With Children:    3,435    (7.6%)

Married Couples No Children:    7,341    (16.2%)

Male Single Parent:                      1,009    (2.2%)
Female Single Parent:                  4,308    (9.5%)
Other Family, Male Head:               1,049    (2.3%)
Other Family, Female Head:           3,109    (6.9%)

Total Families:                              20,251    (44.7%)

Non-Family, Living Alone:           18,884    (41.7%)
Non-Family, Not Living Alone:      6,152    (13.6%)

Total Households:                        45,287

Every occupied house, apartment, or other dwelling is a household, and someone is always designated as "Head" of household. If someone else lives in that unit who is related by birth, marriage, or adoption to the "Head," then that household is considered a Family by Census Bureau definition.

Families without children present may be newlyweds, those with grown children, couples who choose not to have children, or even adult brothers or sisters living together.  What conclusions can we draw about the family types in our 3 mile radius?

Single Adults

Never Married:                              45,846    (50.8%)

Separated/Spouse Absent:            4,816    (5.3%)
Divorced:                                       12,494    (13.8%)

Widowed:                                         4,962    (5.5%)

Total People 15 and Over:            90,250

Not all singles have the same needs. Single ministries may be focused on recent graduates, on support groups for divorced persons, the bereaved, or some combination of these. Age groups and education enrollment figures can help determine which strategies are appropriate here. What conclusion can we draw about the single adults in our 3 mile radius?

REAL MINISTRY - Realm is our cloud-based "members only" church networking platform that helps us perform real ministry by working as a catalyst for engagement - 24/7.  Realm helps our ministry leaders organize their communications, share content, and distribute task assignments within their groups.  It also helps new members by providing the resources they need to be put on pathways to achieve spiritual fulfillment.  If you have only heard about Realm, but you have not activated your free Realm account, reach out to the Realm Orientation Crew at realm@stjamesknox.org
